A How-To Guide for Conferencing

I cried at my first conference. I didn’t know anyone, it was super scary, and I felt horribly out of place. So I went back to my hotel room and cried. But I love conferences now! They are a great way to make new connections, meet up with old friends, learn about exciting new work, and present my scholarship. I know a lot of academics have the same first conference experience and I get so many questions about what to do at a conference: how to prepare, what to wear, how to networking. The list goes on and on.

As summer conference season is fast approaching, I was thinking about writing a tweet-thread to offer some advice. I put out a query online asking what people wanted to know or what they wish they had known and the response was overwhelming. A tweet-thread simply wouldn’t do. A blog post then? It would have been thousands of words or multiple posts and I wanted all of the advice in one place.

So I created an e-book. It offers a step-by-step guide on how to plan for a conference, prepare for your activities there, what to wear, how to network, ice-breaker suggestions, presentation tips, and how to best follow up on your conference experience to make the most of the opportunity. And it’s completely free.
